Project Background:

HarborChase is a unique, luxury senior living facility in the Dr. Phillips neighborhood of Orlando, Florida, built to complement the holistic approach to health care emblematic of the Spring Lake Health and Living Campus on which it sits. Completed by Dr. Phillips Charities, the facility combines architectural and technological features unusual for an assisted living facility. The 26-acre campus is comprised of 186 units: 80 independent living apartments, 72 assisted living apartments, and 34 memory care apartments. Finishes throughout the facility are resort quality with amenities such as two salons, a pool with a deck and pavilion, a putting green, a fitness room, multiple dining rooms, an outdoor dining area, and two elevated outdoor terrace areas with seating.

The Challenge:

With a definitive Spanish style, HarborChase of Dr. Phillips features a multitude of arches and intricate ironwork that is rooted in tradition, but with a transitional modern feel. The client envisioned each different level of care—Independent, Assisted Living and Memory—to have a different look with its own identity, but one that
still blended cohesively. Furniture choices needed to match the traditional, yet contemporary style while also adhering to the guiding principles for seniors: comfortable, but supportive; lower in height throughout the facility; and shallow in depth to ensure sitting and standing with ease. In addition, all of these challenges needed to be met within a tight project turnaround.

The Solution

Due to the compressed timeline, Summer Classic’s project representative Meg Wilson jumped in early to work closely with the Interior Design Associates team offering a variety of product lines that struck a transitional style, perfectly balancing contemporary and traditional. “This was a big job primarily featuring outdoor furniture,” explained Wilson. “Being that the client wanted a unique approach for each level of care, but a cohesive look, I knew we would need to look at a variety of collections.” The Lattice collection was chosen for the Independent Living area, which featured a range of sofas, lounges, and arm chairs along with Superstone table tops with iron bases that complemented the ironwork elements on the property. While most chaise lounges are typically low to the ground and hard for seniors to use, the Lattice collection introduced new ADA-height lounges that better conformed to residents’ needs. The Memory Care facility featured numerous benches throughout the pathways in its wandering garden. The Assisted Living incorporated the Summer Classic’s Aire collection of tables, chairs and lounge chairs that showcased Spanish design elements. Delicate yet durable, the stackable Aire collection of outdoor wicker furniture features seats and backs hand-woven from Summer Classic’s N-dura™ Resin wicker,
which conforms to the body. This collection features graceful curves complemented by the resiliency of hand welded aluminum frames. Throughout all the areas of each level of care, vibrant upholstery colors were chosen such as fuchsia, teal/brown/blue stripes and aqua/cream that provided a cohesive look to the entire facility.

Results:

Both Dr. Phillips Charities and HarborChase were extremely happy with the results and representatives from each entity raved about the wide range of furniture options that came together to create a cohesive look, which conformed to the specific needs of the senior community. As an added bonus for the entire team, HarborChase was chosen as a nominee for the 2020 Senior Housing Awards.
